Base pay The basic compensation an employee receives,
usually as a wage or salary.
Aptitude tests Tests that measure general ability to learn or
acquire a skill.
Bonus A one-time payment that does not become part of
the employee’s base pay.
Development Efforts to improve employees’ ability to handle a variety of assignments.
Flextime A scheduling arrangement in which employees
work a set number of hours per day but vary starting and
ending times.
Grievance A complaint that has been put in writing and
made formal.
Job analysis  A systematic way to gather and analyze information about the content and the human requirements of
jobs, and the context in which jobs are performed.
Job enlargement Broadening the scope of a job by expanding the number of different tasks to be performed.
Job enrichment Increasing the depth of a job by adding
employee responsibility for planning, organizing, controlling, and evaluating the job.
Job rotation The process of shifting a person from job to job.
Mentoring A relationship in which managers at midpoints
in their careers aid individuals in the earlier stages of their
careers.
Outplacement A group of services provided to displaced
employees to give them support and assistance.
Productivity A measure of the quantity and quality of work
done, considering the cost of the resources it took to do the
work.
Punishment Action taken to repel a person from an undesired action.
Placement Fitting a person to the right job.
Recruiting The process of generating a pool of qualified applicants for organizational jobs.
Reinforcement A concept that people tend to repeat responses that give them some type of positive reward and
avoid actions associated with negative consequences.
Role playing A development technique requiring the
trainee to assume a role in a given situation and act out
behaviors associated with that role.
Sexual harassment Actions that are sexually directed, are
unwanted, and subject the worker to adverse employment
conditions or create a hostile work environment.
Stock option A plan that gives an individual the right to
buy stock in a company, usually at a fixed price for a period
of time.
Security Protection of employer facilities and equipment
from unauthorized access and protection of employees
while on work premises or work assignments.
Strike Work stoppage in which union members refuse to
work in order to put pressure on an employer.
Selection The process of choosing individuals who have relevant qualifications to fill jobs in an organization.
Training A process whereby people acquire capabilities to
aid in the achievement of organizational goals.
Vesting The right of employees to receive benefits from
their pension plans.
